Benefits of a low glycemic diet
An international scientific consensus in 2015 agreed that low-glycemic diets can prevent or manage the following:
diabetes
Coronary Artery Disease
obesity
Experts also stated that low glycemic diets are important in insulin resistance and possibly some cancers.
Weight Loss
The benefits of a low glycemic diet for weight loss are controversial. A 2018 review reported that the data are conflicting and that the diet’s positive effects on weight may be due to the fiber content of the foods. However, an older Cochrane review from 2007 found that study participants on low-glycemic diets could lose up to 7 kg and 1-2 weight units.
diabetes
A low-glycemic diet may be beneficial for diabetes. A 2019 review concluded that glycemic index and glycemic load are dietary factors likely to contribute to type 2 diabetes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests that people with diabetes can control their carbohydrate intake using the glycemic index.
